The West – What Else?
America and Europe Still Need Each Other
Since the terrorist attack of 11 September 2001 and the response to it, we have witnessed a deterioration in US-European relations. This is not new, but the acrimony and public mistrust on both sides of the Atlantic suggest that the partnership could operate on a new basis in the future. At its heart is a shift from an alliance of necessity to a partnership of choice. In this collection, renowned authors and practitioners such as George Shultz, R. James Woolsey and Harold James, Janusz Reiter and Walter Russell Mead, Craig Kennedy and James Sheehan reflect on the reorientation of world politics. The focus is on international terrorism and American power, but also on the rise of anti-Americanism and the differences between West and East in a unifying Europe.
