Struggling For Freedom.
Liberalism in Switzerland
The modern Swiss federal state emerged from the liberal revolution of 1848. It rests on three pillars: individual freedom, a free market economy and personal responsibility. On this foundation, Switzerland has survived two world wars largely unscathed and has grown from a poor Alpine country to a prosperous nation. But these foundations have become fragile. A generation accustomed to prosperity is coming of age which increasingly sees the state as a self-service shop for individual desires.
Historian René Lüchinger traces the development and the trials and tribulations of the Swiss nation up to the present day, always with a focus on liberalism. Economist Gerhard Schwarz looks at the opportunities and dangers for liberalism in the 21st century. What is freedom, what does it mean? This is ultimately the question is at the heart of the book.
