Religion, Liberalism and the Rule of Law

An open tension

As our societies become increasingly pluralistic, the status of religions is changing. The relationship between religious beliefs and the secular state needs to be rethought. There is an open tension between the various religions and denominations and the democratic rule of law, as well as between a public that sees itself as liberal. The institutional rules governing the relationship between the state and religions, which have taken different forms at least in Western societies (e.g. the decidedly French secularism as well as the multifaceted American secularism), are urgently being put to the test.
