Religion, Liberalism and the Rule of Law

An open tension

Under the conditions of increasing pluralization of our societies, the status of religions is also changing. The relationship between religious beliefs and secular states must therefore be reconsidered. There is an open tension between the various religions and denominations and the democratic constitutional state as well as a public that sees itself as liberal. The institutional regulations governing the relationship between the state and religions, which have taken on different forms, at least in Western societies (e.g. in decidedly French secularism as well as in the multifaceted American secularism), are urgently being put to the test.
