Credit is often hailed as the lubricant of progress and development. But an excess of credit can easily lead to the dangerous territory of a debt trap. Global debt is currently two to three times the world’s annual output of goods and services, and rising fast. Throughout history, debt crises have been devastating. This raises urgent questions: What are the causes and limits of excessive debt? At what point does debt threaten our freedom? And what measures can be taken to address the problem?
