City- State – Utopia or Realistic Model?
Theorists and Practitioners in the Debate
What makes the city-state special? How does it balance comparative advantages such as balance of power, urbanity and neutrality against the inherent vulnerability of foreign dependence, domestic economic isolation and spatial constriction? Can the city-state concept be implemented as a possible third way for Switzerland? The authors examine these questions theoretically and empirically from the perspectives of politics, economics, sociology and security studies. They outline food for thought and alternative solutions and provide orientation for the current debate on Switzerland’s positioning.
