18. Workshop

Why liberalism is so difficult to “sell”

Liberalism is struggling, both as a political movement and as a world view. It is not dead, as its opponents like to claim, but it is losing strength, especially in rich European countries, while it continues to find favor in the emerging countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America. Is the erosion of this concept in Europe due to a “spoiling of freedom”? Has freedom become so self-evident that it is no longer valued highly enough? These questions were explored in depth at the Progress Foundation workshop in Schwarzenberg, Vorarlberg. The participants tried to get to the bottom of the erosion of liberal ideas in Europe, also in the knowledge that Europe and North America owe their success story of the last two centuries primarily to those periods in which they were largely oriented towards such central liberal concepts as competition, open markets, private property and personal responsibility of individuals and families.
